Summary

This week Jason and I talk about why a home practice is essential if you want to integrate yoga in your day to day life. We also offer our thoughts on what constitutes home practice so that you give yourself a break and focus on what's important -- getting on your mat! Our hope is that home practice can be the thing in your life that consistently feels like a respite, a refuge, a haven.

We hope you enjoy this conversation where we talk through these 7 distinct reasons that developing a home practice is beneficial:

  • It's so much easier to be consistent
  • You can focus on regions of the body that need more support
  • You can use it as a supplement to your studio classes (or other forms of exercise)
  • You get to practice the poses you love
  • You get to spend more time on the poses you want to master but struggle with
  • We all need a daily dose of self-regulation
  • For yoga teachers, it's a way to get in touch with your own voice, creativity, and insight

And we want to, we're going to go through why we think it's important to have a home practice.

0:43.0

But let's just first start with the, you know,

0:48.0

long view and talk about what we even mean by home practice.

0:53.0

Yeah, so you and I, as we are developing this episode,

0:56.3

we had a little bit of a disagreement.

0:58.6

And I will tell you that it's the same disagreement

1:01.8

that I've had with myself over the past 15 years.

1:06.4

Because one of the things that we are disagreeing about is really what constitutes a home practice.

1:12.3

Is it watching glow at home? Is it watching Yoga with

1:16.0

Adrian at home? Or is it being alone and developing your own sequence and doing your own poses.

1:24.4

I would say surprisingly I was the heavy in this conversation.

1:28.0

Well, and I said when you said okay so we can include, you know, watching, doing a class at home while you're,

1:37.1

someone's leading you, you know, on a streaming service or something.

1:41.0

And I said, well, why?

1:42.4

That's not what we're talking about because you and I kind of came up in this time where you were definitely expected to if you were a teacher especially have your own quiet time on the mat at home.

1:57.8

But you convinced me.

1:59.4

So talk through why you think it's changed.
