Summary

The narratives we create for ourselves influence everything from life-changing decisions down to what we eat and how we spend our free time, but what exactly is a narrative and how do you go about creating a positive one that pulls you in the direction you want to go in life? What to Listen For How do you justify a career change if you already have the “perfect” job? What is the one thing you take with you every time you leave a job for a new one, and how can you use that to minimize the regret you might feel for leaving a great job? What is a narrative and why are they so influential when it comes to how we think and make decisions? If you feel you are overanalytical, how do you use it as a strength while making sure it doesn’t cripple you in social situations? What can you do to make networking an enjoyable process rather than something you feel like you have to do in order to grow professionally? How do you become more likable as a coworker? Why is likability more important than hard skills when it comes to being promoted in the workplace? What can you do to increase your value if you feel hindered in the dating pool by a disability? What does it mean to hang on to gifts and memorabilia from past relationships and what does it mean to get rid of them? Can you ever truly stop comparing yourself to others or is it human nature? You are what you eat - everything you put in your body either makes you healthier or sicker. The same can be said for your narrative - everything you do either strengthens your narrative or weakens it. For example, if you believe you are not worthy of a promotion at work, you will make decisions every day which strengthen that narrative. However, if you wake up one day and make the choice to believe you are worthy of a promotion, then you can take conscious action to reinforce that narrative by developing positive relationships with your coworkers and supervisors as well as making sure your supervisors know you’re getting the results which make you worthy of the promotion. Over time your belief in yourself will override the narrative that was holding you back and the new positive, healthier narrative will take its place. All right. First question of the day. Jack wrote us with this question. I'm 35 years old and work as a manager at a great restaurant and slash bar.

I'm not really enjoying my job anymore and I don't think I could do this long term. The pay is good and at this point, I basically make my own schedule.

My friends tell me I have the perfect job, but I'm not happy. How should I go about a career change?

1:51.0

Johnny, I know this is a question that we often find a lot of our students at bootcamp are struggling with as well.

1:57.0

Yeah. I mean, I'm trying to figure out, and this is all speculation about how Jack got into this line of work. And I'm wondering if it is a job that where he just kept getting promoted and kept getting offered some better pay

2:13.0

and then a better schedule. And he's and he's chill. But you know, I personally know when I got into my 30s, I started looking around and realized that I wasn't being stimulated mentally in the way that I wanted to be.

So, I mean, that's what I'm going to guess, but I can certainly understand it. I mean, at that time, he's already put in a decent amount of time at this job.

2:50.0

And usually what comes with that is, well, if I make this change, then I give up my what I've put into this. And that's, and that could be difficult for anybody.

3:01.0

It's also it's the same when people realize that their friends circles holding the back and they need to bring in new friends, but they don't want to lose what they have, but they don't know what's about to come in.

3:11.0

Right sunk cost. Yeah, we get very tied to the effort, time and resources we put into something, which often makes us less likely to make the decision to leave.

3:21.0

Yeah, and, and you know, his friends are telling him that he has the perfect job. Sure, his friends are seeing him that he gets to hang out late nights. He's working in a very social job.

3:32.0

He's not stressed out that he's making his own schedule. He's making his own schedule. So he's got plenty of time and he's got cash to burn because he's in the restaurant business.

3:43.0

Yeah, so he's coming home with some cash every night. And to them, I'm sure it does look like the dream job, right? They're doing probably nine to five jobs working on us, I've stressed out in the corporate, trying to climb the corporate ladder.
