final dying moments on the cross, Jesus was fulfilling prophecy with precise intention, proving

Now here's Paul, teaching from John 19.

In the 24 hours surrounding the death of Jesus, there are 20 Old Testament prophecies that are being fulfilled.

The history that we find recorded as Jesus on the cross is intentional and specific.

There are things that John wants us to know about Jesus.

And so what he records is very careful. He doesn't, we know from things he says

elsewhere in John that doesn't record everything. This is not everything that could have been said

about the cross, but specific things that are recorded for us, John says, so that we would know that Jesus is the Christ,

the Son of God, and that believing we would have life in His name.

So here's the next words of Jesus on the cross.

This is John 19, 28, and 29.

After this, Jesus knowing that all was now finished, he said, to fulfill scripture, I like that parenthetic little phrase, I thirst.

A jar full of sour wine stood there, so they put a sponge full of the sour wine on a hyssop branch and held it to his mouth.

There is so much here in this brief little vignette of Jesus on the cross.

Here he is in the throes of death.

But Jesus knows who he is, and he knows what he's come to do.
