0:00.0 | This is the Baimah podcast with Marty Solomon. I'm his co-host, Brent Billings. Today we look at the next few verses in the Sermon of the Mount where Jesus speaks of the relationship between his teaching and the teachings of the Hebrew scriptures. |
0:19.0 | Yes, Sirree, every verse we said, every verse. So on this one, this one is a really good one to talk about. I feel like this is maybe one of the most misunderstood pieces of Jesus's teaching. |
0:32.0 | Yeah, this is a good one. This is definitely a good one. Maybe just to remind ourselves where we've been, we've been talking about Matthew, we've been using Matthew. What has his agenda been? |
0:42.0 | He's talking about the Mums are they outcast the unwanted like the normal typical status with the religious status quo is not accurate to what the kingdom of God looks like Matthew says. |
0:54.0 | And the kingdom got as much more about the people that we don't think are in it than we realize. So that says agenda while we're here, let's just review what was Mark. What was his agenda? |
1:03.0 | Mark was the Roman gospel. He's writing to the Romans. |
1:07.0 | Writing to the Romans. He himself was a he was a he wasn't Roman. Right. He was a he was a Jew. He was a Jew writing to Romans. Excellent. |
1:17.0 | So Matthew's due to Jew and then Mark is due to Romans. This is sounding very like corporate all of a sudden B2B B2C. It's a Jew to Jew. |
1:30.0 | Luke, who was Luke? Luke was writing an ordered gospel. |
1:40.0 | Right. Possibly a parasha companion. Yeah. With let's see here. Parasha companion. And he was if we have a Jew writing to Jews and a Jew writing to Romans, Luke would be a Jew. |
1:53.0 | Okay. Okay. Procolate would be the word that we want to use. Right. Procolate convert. So in their eyes as Jew as they come, once he's converted, he is as if he was born by blood. |
2:07.0 | But he writes to we debate, but I I suggested Goulders work a Jewish audience. And then we said, John would we call what we call John? |
2:17.0 | That's good. We're reviewing because I grafted grafted. Yeah. Got a tree. And we have been Romans 11, which we haven't talked about yet, but we have been grafted into this tree. Or should I say Gentiles have been grafted into this tree. |
2:33.0 | And yeah. So those little little reviews. So we're using Matthew, the agenda of a mums are we started there. We started in his genealogy. We saw the Christmas story. And then as the gospel gets set up, I don't think that agenda gets lost. |
2:48.0 | And especially towards a summer on the Mount, as Jesus begins right before he begins to speak publicly, you have this these crowds because he starts to bring kingdom John the Baptist baptizes him. He has tested in the desert. |
3:01.0 | John the John the Baptist is arrested. And then Jesus takes up this mantle of his rabbi possibly, who was possibly his rabbi. And he says repent for the king who haven't is here. And as he brings this kingdom, not just the announcement, but he's also actually bringing kingdom with him. |
3:17.0 | All kinds of people are showing up remind us of this group that shows up there from everywhere. |
3:25.0 | Typical people. No, no, all the people who don't belong in the triangle did it include the typical people. Yeah. |
3:32.0 | Okay. There too. So you got like, I would have people out of me, but you also were surprised by everybody else. And you're like, wait a minute. |
3:39.0 | And so in response to this, the sermon on the Mount, Jesus goes to a mountain side, a certain mountain side, he sits down, it says he sees the crowds and he in response to this diverse group of people all responding to the kingdom. |
3:53.0 | We suggested that his disciples were probably a little taken aback, a little confused, a little uneasy. I think you use the word uncomfortable. And Jesus calls them to him. And he says listen. |
4:04.0 | And he says listen, and he starts the sermon with this, and these pronouncements that we call the be attitudes, all these people that you think are not in God's favor is with them like the king of goddess for them. |
