The Palace of Holyrood House sits at the bottom of Edinburgh's Royal Mile.

It's in one of the most historic parts of the city. Nearly 900 years ago, an abbey was established and in subsequent centuries

it was transformed into a royal palace. Now, it has a fascinating, really rich and colourful history,

which has now been captured in a new book written by a former

curator at the palace, Deborah Clark. I went to visit the palace where I met Deborah and the current

curator Emma Stead, who began by describing its origins. So the foundation of the Abbey is in 1128,

and the name Holyrood comes from Scott's Holy Cross. So the legend is that

David I was out hunting in this area one day when he was happened upon by a stag. And fearing for his

life he reached out to defend himself and a cross appeared between the antlers of the stag

was spared and in gratitude for this the king decided to set up a monastic foundation here on the abbey
