Summary

Could celebrations feel complete even without alcohol? Lauren's journey with alcohol began in eighth grade at a concert, where she had her first beer because drinking seemed cool. What started as casual drinking soon turned into binge drinking and blackouts. When she realized that alcohol was hurting her marriage and making it hard to be a good parent, she searched online for help and found This Naked Mind. In this episode, Lauren shares her story of moving from a life surrounded by alcohol to building a healthier relationship with alcohol and helping others do the same. In this episode, Annie and Lauren will discuss: - Her first encounter with alcohol - Going from weekend drinking to constant blackouts - Moving to a “drinking town” and working as a bartender - When the bad began to outweigh the good - How drinking made parenting harder for Lauren - The psychology of “the pause” - The beauty behind the “data point” - The surprising truth about alcohol and why we don’t know it - Enjoying celebrations without a drink - The principle of “firsts” in living alcohol-free - The power of a gentle approach to change - Embracing your past as part of your journey - And other topics… Related Episodes: EP 470: Reader Question – When will I start feeling better without alcohol? https://thisnakedmind.com/ep-470-reader-question-when-will-i-start-feeling-better-without-alcohol  EP 568: Reader’s Questions – How To Deal with Pressure to Drink from a Loved One? https://thisnakedmind.com/podcast/ep-568-readers-questions-how-to-deal-with-pressure-to-drink-from-a-loved-one/  EP 652: Reader’s Question – How To Plan an Alcohol-Free Vacation https://thisnakedmind.com/?post_type=podcast&p=34941  Connect with Lauren: Lauren’s Website: https://coachlaurenohanlon.com  Ready to take the next step on your journey?  Visit https://learn.thisnakedmind.com/podcast-resources for free resources, programs, and more. Hi, this is Annie Grace, and welcome to this Naked Mind podcast. I'm here with Lauren. Hi, Lauren. How are you? Hi, I'm so good. How are you?

0:23.6

Great. Why don't you take us back to the beginning in your story? Where did it all start for you?

0:30.9

I grew up in an Irish Catholic family. So alcohol was always around. I saw my parents drink,

0:35.6

but never saw them get drunk or out of control

0:39.3

or anything like that. I remember having my very first beer. I was in the eighth grade and I was at a

0:46.6

3-11 concert and I was with one of my girlfriends and her older brother and sister and some of their

0:53.8

friends. I got offered a beer

0:56.2

and everybody else was drinking and they were older and they were so cool. I thought, yeah,

1:02.6

like, I'll take one. What the heck? I took a sip and it was the foulest thing that I have,

1:09.5

I couldn't fathom that people actually drank it. But the girl that I was

1:13.2

talking to, she was so pretty and she was so put together. And she was drinking beer. So let's just

1:18.5

acquire this taste and suck it down. Thinking back to when I had my first beer, it reminded me of

1:25.2

a concert that I went to before that, my new kids on the

1:29.1

block feature concert. I was so excited that I got a bag of watermelon jolly ranchers.

1:34.4

It was like so exciting and I didn't need any alcohol and it's just funny to think back to when

1:41.7

we were kids. But then so high school, it was kind of your typical drink on the weekends, go to somebody's house whose parents are out of town and walk around with your 12 pack of Natty and warm because you can't use the fridge because you're not supposed to be there.

1:58.5

Yeah.

1:58.8

So it was just kind of weekend drinking.

2:00.3

But it was also in

2:01.8

high school that I had my first blackouts, too. So I started blacking out pretty early on in my

2:10.7

drinking journey. And when I went to college, it certainly amped up. I moved a couple hours away from home. I moved into a dorm and
