Summary

What are the costs and benefits of living in a society where people can be cancelled for their speech? Are "cancelled" people, like Gina Carano, irredeemable? Amanda and Faiz use “cancel culture” as a jumping off point for what ends up being a wide-ranging, deeply analytical conversation with Washington Post columnist Alyssa Rosenberg. They cover the performative nature of online discourse; the primacy of persuasion; whether or not (and how) to engage with people spewing hate online; and ultimately, the idea that we may come to understand each other better by working through our differences.

So Fash, I have been thinking nonstop about a story that NBC News ran last week in which

critical race theory in school boards.

0:50.1

And what NBC News found is that there are more than 135 groups from this network called

0:56.8

no left turn that are basically astroturfing protests.

1:01.0

They are running recall campaigns against school board members.

1:04.0

They are trying to conflate critical race theory, which is a legal concept around the intersection

1:10.0

of race and the law and policies with teaching an honest reckoning of racism in American history.

1:16.4

I think this is so important to notice, and I've been thinking about this NBC News

1:20.8

story all week, because much like the voter suppression, none of this shit is an accident.

1:26.0

It is paid for and funded by Republican mega donors in order to cultivate a culture war,

1:31.4

especially in this case on the local level and around education, because they understand

1:36.1

intimately that when you get into local fights about people's kids, it becomes personal.
