Summary

Recorded audio-journal style in the field, this episode is brought to you raw and unedited and contains the account of a great bull moose hunt. Pals Joseph von Benedikt and Joe Kennedy are dropped via bush plane in the vast Alaska interior, and hunt DIY for 12 days for moose, caribou, black bear, and wolf. Against the odds of hot weather, no rutting action, and a moose population made sparse by severe winter kill, they find and take a fantastic bull during this first half of the hunt. ENJOY!

I'm here laying in a little tent, a little three man. Tent It feels more like a two man tent with all our gear in it.

With my good buddy Joe Kennedy and we've just finished our first full day of moose hunting, managed to get into camp right, kind of at the last minute last night, sometimes happened, and got in safely, got camp set up, got a good night's rest.

Did a little bit of Colin Glassing this morning, did a little bit of exploring, saw a cow moose, and then spent the evening with Joe on a

vantage point about 300 yards up behind and above me while I raked and let out the

0:57.3

occasional mournful cow call trying to entice a lonely bull in. I thought we were going to strike out and have a totally dead

1:08.8

evening, but we didn't. What were you seeing from where you were at? Joe, you said you saw some

1:15.5

Caribou off in the distance. Yeah, I up on the ridge there was three or four Caribou. One of them was just white and I was watching those and then scanning

1:27.0

the valley from my vantage I could see quite a bit of ground and so I you know spent my time going back and

1:36.6

forth you know between the caribou and and then looking up and down that the riverbed there.

1:44.0

How far off were the caribou?

1:47.0

Oh, there were quite a ways.

1:49.0

I didn't range it.

1:50.0

It was outside of my range finder, but they were on a ridge across Canyon.

1:57.6

Well, cool. If one of them had a big white neck, that'd be a mature bowl. Maybe they'll work down into the valley. I think it was about,

2:07.5

oh, 20 minutes before dark. I caught a flicker of something across the valley and like literally 150 yards behind our camp.

2:17.0

Got my binocular on it just in time to see the frosty gray back of a big-bodied moose and the next gap he flickered through I saw one

2:28.2

paddle so I knew it was a bull and that was all I saw for like 10 minutes.

2:35.0

But then I saw you suddenly go on and point and get on your rifle pointing on down the valley a little bit.

2:42.0

So I swiveled around and watched and watch. Tell me what you saw.

2:48.0

The first thing I saw was just the behind leg and I thought it was it was gray like that
