The U.S. trade war may expand soon. President Donald Trump is threatening to impose a 200% tariff on European alcohol.

He posted on true social that he'd introduced the huge duties unless the EU takes back its 50%

tariff on U.S. whiskey, which brought in yesterday to retaliate against Trump's steel and

aluminum levies. CNN's Elena Treene has been talking with White House officials.

I think this shows, this approach that the president and his administration is taking,

shows just how quickly

some of this tariff policy can get out of hand.

We are really seeing this not only stop and go approach, but also this tit for tat retaliation

back and forth with a lot of these different allies of the United States that are beginning

to really not only obviously affect the markets, which we have seen on a downward

spiral for the last couple of days now, but also the relationships that the United States have

with these different trading partners.

NATO chief, Margruta, is meeting with President Donald Trump today at the White House,

following the U.S. Ukraine talks in Saudi Arabia.

It comes as U.S. Special Envoy Steve Whitkoff arrives in Moscow

to discuss the 30-day American-backed ceasefire proposal Ukraine agreed to.

But, speaking to Russian state media, an aide to the country's president, Vladimir Putin,

cast doubt on the plan.

This is nothing more than a temporary respite for the Ukrainian military, and nothing more.

We believe that our goal is a long-term peaceful settlement.

That is what we are striving for.
