Hi, this is Monica Packer, and you're listening to About Progress, where we are about

progress made practical.

I have a bone to pick with one of the most heralded achievements on our modern day, the 30

under 30 lists.

And that's plural because there are many.

From Forbes to specialized industry and other organization sites and newsletters and magazines,

you can find a new 30 under 30 list almost whenever you want to.

I definitely find it both inspirational and motivational to see people create a name for

themselves and to accomplish admirable things. But I do take issue with how seemingly obsessed we are

as a society, with the very young, doing very big things and in very short amounts of time. For me, it's that yucky feeling that

if you're even a day past 30 years old and you haven't made it in some way or another, you may never.

It also sends the message that what matters are the public kind of successes, the ones that are

quite big. As I am personally approaching turning 40 years old, I am increasingly drawn to

learning about people who started quite late in life, the late bloomers. I am also intrigued by

those who diligently do the small work for many years,
