BB and Annie

this is the story of a marriage

between Benjamin Breckenridge Warfield

and Annie Pierce Kincaid.

Of course we know Warfield is the great stalwart of Princeton,

sometimes called the lion of Princeton, was that significant figure in the

fundamentalist modernist controversy, was a mentor to Jay Gressam-Machin and laid the groundwork for

Maachin's work and for those who would fight the good fight as it were within the

denominations and truly for the faith in the 20th century.

But I want to talk about Warfield's marriage.

Warfield was born in 1851 in Lexington, Kentucky. A year later in 1852, Annie Pierce Kincaid was born

also in Lexington, Kentucky. The Warfields were members of Second Presbyterian Church

in Lexington, while the Kincaids were members of First Presbyterian Church.

But even though they went to different churches,

they apparently spent a lot of time together.

Annie's family was a family of lawyers and a family that had generals in the

Revolutionary War. This was a well-established family and a well-heeled family.

Her father at one point even defended, as a lawyer, defended Abraham Lincoln successfully

in 1855.

So that's quite a claim to fame.
