Hello. Hello again. This is Beyond Reasonable Doubt, an episode called Alfred Schmalford.

That title won't mean anything to you now, but will by the end.

I'm Chris Warburton, and this is 2011.

And this is Michael Peterson, who is now to all intents and purpose, a free man.

I have waited over eight years.

2,988 days as a matter of fact and I count for an opportunity to have a retrial. I want to

thank Judge Hudson for giving me that opportunity so that I can vindicate myself and prove my innocence in a fair

trial this time. I want to thank all the people who have supported me from all over the world.

Michael Peterson must wear an electronic tag and stay in the house in the evening and can only

travel in Durham, Orange and Wake counties, but he's no longer an inmate at the Nash Correctional.

He is no longer teaching literacy to other inmates.

He is no longer living in fear of attack.

Thank you very, very much. So how are Michael's neighbours keeping in touch with him?

Funally enough, we have a close friend who's now deceased who took in one of the French filmmakers who

subsequently fell in love with Michael home, came back to Durham to visit him while he was in jail and in prison.

And so I would hear via Sophie and my friend Jan updates about Michael and because he would call the house.

And then when Michael was released from prison I never heard whether Sophie

what happened to that relationship which she stuck with him for a long time.
