This is un-Ladylike. I'm Kristen. In September, a New York Times article by Lisa Miller caught my eye.

Headline, the power of a smaller breast.

And no, it did not catch my eye because I am a haver of a smaller breast. I'm talking to you with a pair of a cups right now.

This article described breast reductions as all the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, there was a 64% increase in the number of elective breast reductions between 2019 and 2023. And that's not counting gender affirming and reconstructive procedures.

But the article framed that statistic in the

question, are women asserting their independence or capitulating to yet another

impossible beauty standard?

To which I posed the question, is it really this, either or?

Like not to be too on the nose, but it struck me as a tad reductive. Maybe you heard the episode back in early

2022 when on Lady Light covered breast reductions. That episode was inspired by a listener we're calling S who

wrote in with a subject line I will never forget how darith a lady reduce Dem titties?

For S and another un-lady named Kelly, who we talked to for that episode,

their decisions to get breast reductions are far more nuanced than asserting their independence

or capitulating to beauty standards.

And to that, New York Times reporters credit, yes, the article addresses some of those nuances, but I wasn't

the only unlady skeptical of its kind of overall angle as a trend piece.
