Summary

Alpinist and photographer Cory Richards was living at full speed. A steady stream of Himalayan expeditions and assignments from National Geographic kept him relentlessly moving around the world. Meanwhile, his long struggle with bi-polar disorder, PTSD, alcoholism, and sex addiction hit new lows until Cory’s world came undone. Today, Cory’s stepped away from both climbing and photography, has written two books and in a lot of ways, is happier than he’s ever been.  Thanks to our sponsors The North Face  Altitude Climbing Enroll in Hazel’s brand new course to overcome fear of falling and learn more about the 7 signs of fear at altitudeclimbing.com/climbinggold. Alex, do you remember the first time you met Corey Richards?

0:04.4

I actually don't remember the first time we met necessarily,

0:06.9

but I do remember our first shoot together, which was in Yosemite.

0:10.4

He shot me on Astro Man.

It was basically right after I free-sold at Asterman in the roster for the first time,

photographer I ever took pictures with. Yeah, it's funny because you guys probably had a career that

was super intertwined because he was at that moment, like he was starting really out on his photo

0:31.5

career as well and his professional climbing career, right? Yeah, he's maybe a few years older than me,

0:36.7

but we were basically at the same point where

0:38.2

we were kind of just starting off at roughly the same time. And I think we definitely were on

0:42.5

the same point in the curve where you're young and hungry and you're fired up and you just want

0:46.2

to do something, you know, like prove yourself in some way. Corey really found his niche with high

0:51.0

altitude mountaineering with mountain climbing. I mean, he's the first American to climb an 8,000 meter peak in winter, which is heinous

0:57.3

because it's so cold.

0:59.1

And then he's also climbed Everest without oxygen and Snapchat his way up it.

1:03.7

That was a hashtag Everest, no filter with Adrian Bollinger.

1:08.1

That generated something like a billion social media impressions.

1:10.4

It's like something insane.

1:11.7

It was a total moment for Snapchat. One of the things, one of his strengths as a photographer is

1:17.5

being able to access positions that many other photographers can't and then get shots that other
