Summary

**We have lots of exciting announcements (including 2024 event tickets), read all about them HERE** Egodystonic. Enmeshment. Sense-of-self. Differentiation. These words and the ideas they represent can be unfamiliar and even downright intimidating when you first start listening to Dr. Finlayson-Fife’s podcasts and courses--it can sometimes feel like learning an entirely new language! But, as with learning any new language, the more you immerse yourself by listening and learning, the more clear these transformative concepts will become. In this NEW podcast episode, Sherrae Phelps interviews Dr. Finlayson-Fife about her unique approach to coaching and what sets this approach apart from others. Throughout the episode, Dr. Finlayson-Fife breaks down many of the phrases and concepts that are central to differentiation theory and her work, and goes on to discuss why these concepts are so powerful and effective for those looking to grow in their capacity to love.  Whether you are new to her content or have been here a while, this episode is a helpful listen for anyone who wants a more concrete understanding of differentiation theory and the uncomfortable process of human development and relational change.

Okay, can you talk a little bit about your approach with therapy? I think it's, it's a little

0:27.8

bit unique and different, and I've heard you kind of explain it before in podcast before,

0:32.4

like what you see your role is but we

0:35.2

articulated a little bit like what's your role when you're helping a couple or an individual

0:40.3

person like what is it that you're doing so that you can be a most help for them?

0:45.0

Yeah.

0:46.0

Well, it's kind of funny because I've done what I have intuitively felt was right, which isn't particularly conventional and I have found a theory

0:57.1

that explains what I was doing. Like you started doing it before you were

1:01.6

yeah well that's not entirely fair because I was listening to people

1:05.3

whose approach really resonated with me.

1:08.0

Dr. Schnarish is one of them.

1:09.6

Terry Reel's approach is more differentiation-based, but I but it's not like, it's, how to say it, it's not that I was looking

1:18.0

for someone who teaches differentiation, it was I was looking for an approach that felt like it fit my experience of change.

1:27.2

And I have since come across a theorist of adult development that also explains what I have observed myself and so it's kind

1:38.7

of cool to see that come together. But what I think, I think a lot of approaches around therapy and change are about

1:50.0

sympathy empathy compassion letting sympathy, empathy, empathy, compassion, letting people feel their feelings, giving people a sounding

1:58.1

board, and understanding why people do the things they do, I mean that's a lot of

2:04.5

psychodynamic Freudian-based theory is that if people kind of understand their

2:11.3

defenses and why they are doing things, you know, it can explain

2:15.2

adult behavior, all of which is true. I mean you can say, yeah, I do this because this

2:20.1

happened and that makes sense why I do it. But it doesn't necessarily lead to change.
