Today on the show, the emerging economy that we're rarely talking about,

but which has enjoyed one of the economic miracles of this century.

I remember growing up, we still bought food with rationing stamps,

from walking everywhere to going around in cars, traveling abroad.

Local people's life have changed so much.

The country we're describing here is Vietnam.

It's enjoyed more than 6% average annual growth every year

for the last 30 years or more, a staggering growth path,

transforming one of Asia's poorest economies into a major global trading hub. But now we're asking,

has the advent of extreme weather and a new multi-billion dollar corruption scandal changed the

country's prospects? There are definitely structural issues that they're going to have to confront.

But I will say, having seen them solve even trickier problems over the years that they'll get there.

Okay. That's Business Daily from the BBC. One sleepy rural village somewhere in southern Vietnam.

This was my recorded impression as I crossed into the country from neighbouring Cambodia just a few years ago.

Sleepy really is the word. This is the middle of the day, a working day.

There's not a lot going on. You walk down the street here and it's just the odd passing moped and a few stray chickens.

But this picture of somnolent inactivity changed entirely when I reached Saigon, the big city,

just a few kilometres down the road.

So over the bus deck, the metro system, I'm really happy to see my Saigon is growing now.
