For one long, struggling discount chain, a recent announcement

seemed to make a lot of sense. Last week, Family Dollar announced it was planning to close

nearly 1,000 of its roughly 8,000 U.S. stores. The discount chain, which was bought by Dollar Tree

for $8.5 billion in 2015 will close 600 locations this year and

370 stores in the coming years as leases expire. Years of mismanagement and poor store conditions

have hurt the chain's brand according to CNN. Inflation is also squeezed shoppers, in addition to a reduction in benefits on the

supplemental nutrition assistance program or SNAP. Those factors have conspired to create a

general pullback of consumer spending. Add all that up, and, well, family dollar's future isn't
