If you're a parent, you know that the days immediately following the birth of a baby

pass in a spectacular blur. There may be discomfort, but there's also overflowing love, and we can

almost guarantee this one, no sleep to be found. In some countries outside the U.S., it's fairly common

for mothers who have just given birth to retreat, away from

society and outside obligations, while she and her partner focus on healing and welcoming the newest

member of their family. But here in America, the norm appears to go something like this,

have a baby, pop right back into society, figure everything out, and come back for a checkup

after six long weeks. That expectation,
