Summary

In this episode Laura talks with special guest Henry Riley, LBC journalist, about Sarah Everard’s abduction, rape and murder by Wayne Couzens, a Metropolitan Police officer. What followed was a nationwide outpouring of grief, shock and anger. Women shared stories of male violence whilst the Metropolitan Police downplayed Couzen’s as an unfortunate ‘bad apple’ and declared he ‘was not a police officer.’ Since Sarah we’ve heard nonstop about police officer’s including David Carrick perpetrating abuse and violence towards women. More recently Wayne Couzen’s extensive indecent exposure history was revealed, and the fact women reported him but the Metropolitan Police Service failed to act. Henry shares his investigation into PC Terry Melka, a police officer convicted of indecent exposure who is still a serving Metropolitan police officer. Laura details her experience of working in the Metropolitan Police and how police perpetrators were dealt with. This important interview was recorded on the day Baroness Louise Casey published her deeply disturbing 363-page report detailing institutional racism, sexism, misogyny and homophobia in the Metropolitan Police. Baroness Casey has called for urgent root and branch reform of the “Boys Club” that’s the UK’s largest police service. Trigger warning: Listener discretion is advised. The public of London is being failed by an institutionally sexist, racist and homophobic met,

0:07.0

riddled with bullying and poor leadership, the most damning report in the forces history warned today.

0:13.7

Following the murder of Sarah Everard by serving officer Wayne Cousins,

0:18.1

the met police appointed Baroness Louise Casey to lead an independent review of its standards of

0:25.6

One of the findings of the Casey report, she highlighted incidents including dildos being put in

0:31.0

coffee mugs, bags of urine, thrown at cars and ethnic minority officers being ridiculed as examples

0:37.9

of misconduct. Rate victims were being failed with forensic samples taken from them and stored in

0:44.8

fridges so filled that evidence was being ruined through contamination. Women and children had

0:50.8

been left behind and placed at greater risk than necessary because of the decision to exclude

0:56.6

violence against them from a definition of serious violence which focused instead on tackling

1:02.4

knife crime and drugs. What needs to be done? Casey states that these failings are primarily due

1:09.0

to poor management and made a succession of recommendations for reform. These included the

1:15.6

need to repair stop and search in order to stop the met over policing black Londoners as well as

1:21.8

the need to narrowing the diversity gap amongst officers. She suggested bringing in specialist

1:28.4

expertise from outside to improve management. She says the vetting system for officers is broken

1:35.6

and the caseloads for rape, sexual abuse and domestic abuse officers are unmanageably high.

Dame Louise added I absolutely recognise the commitment that met officers make to protecting

1:46.9

the people of the capital city every day but everyone within the met also now needs to recognise

1:53.5

that its failings go well beyond the actions of bad apple officers. The met can now no longer presume

2:00.2

that it has the permission of the people of London to police them but it is fixable if the met

2:05.8

recognises the true scale of the challenge in front of it with drastic and effective action.
