Summary

Welcome to this special series of Don’t Salt My Game celebrating the release of my new book How to Just Eat It. For the next several weeks, I’ll be posting two new episodes of the podcast (Tuesdays and Fridays) that correspond with a chapter of the book to help you take your learning further and deepen your intuitive eating practice. How To Just Eat It is out now! Episode 9 of this series will drop on Tuesday 16th Feb!

In today’s episode I’m talking to Paige Smathers RDN, CD is a registered dietitian nutritionist in private practice and podcaster whose work revolves around helping people heal their relationships with food and their body. She specializes in chronic dieting, addiction recovery nutrition, eating disorders and family feeding dynamics. Her approach to nutrition and health is grounded in mindfulness and is rooted in the intuitive eating and Health at Every Size frameworks. In this episode we’re talking all about the final principle of Intuitive Eating; Gentle Nutrition.

In this episode we talk about:

  • How choosing what to eat is like choosing what to wear
  • Unconditional permission to eat; what it is and what it isn’t
  • Why it’s important not to come to Gentle Nutrition before we are ready
  • Food flexibility
  • How mindfulness can support our relationship with food
  • Letting go of ‘food perfection’
  • Food satisfaction
  • Food curiosity

Paige talks us through how we can start to take the power back into our own bodies to find what feels good for us.

How to Just Eat It. We're here having conversations with game changers in nutrition and health,

0:18.7

food, body liberation, and some other things thrown in

0:21.6

for shits. In this episode, we're talking about Chapter 11, Gentle Nutrition. Gentle Nutrition is the

0:28.8

last principle of intuitive eating, because before we approach nutrition information, we really

0:34.7

want to have broken down food rules, dismantled black and white thinking around food

0:39.2

and given ourselves lots of unconditional permission to eat. And most importantly, given ourselves

0:44.1

plenty of time to work our way out of feelings of restriction and deprivation that can make

0:48.7

food feel chaotic and out of control. If we come to gentle nutrition before we're ready, it can be a way that we

0:56.8

justify restriction to ourselves. That's particularly true for anyone who has an eating disorder

1:02.4

history, but equally applies to folks living in diet culture who have been socialized to be a rule

1:08.3

follower or to not rock the boat too much, so they assimilate

1:12.0

and fit in. So if you're jumping straight in with gentle nutrition, then I invite you to pause

1:17.6

and reflect on whether that's coming from a place of self-care and self-respect or a place of

1:22.8

self-control and self-hatred before going any further. I think it's also helpful to keep in mind that there's no

1:29.3

single diet, food or pattern of eating that can result in immortality, perfect health or

1:36.8

permanent weight loss. What works best for you and your body will vary depending on a ton of factors. Your access to food, your stress levels,

1:47.7

whether you're dealing with any background health concerns, financial considerations,

1:52.6

your physical capacity to plan, shop and cook for foods, which could be variable,

as well as the trauma of living in diet culture and other oppressive systems,
