One day in 1914, 10-year-old Li Hoi Chun stood barefoot on the dirt road on the outskirts of

Vosha and City in southern China. He was one of hundreds of peasant boys hired by the locomotives

to hawk their wares. At the time, Li Hoi Chun was working at a ramshackel restaurant.

And his job was to entice patrons to come in and eat. But unlike a lot of other

boys' age, Li Hoi Chun didn't merely shout out the day's specials and Cantonese.

He sang them. The boy had a sweet falsetto voice and it just so happened that on that particular

day, he managed to catch the ear of a famous Cantonese opera singer. The man heard the little

boy singing and was so taken with him that he invited him to become his apprentice.

Hoi Chun's parents were overjoyed at this news, both because of the financial opportunity

this presented, as well as the fact that this meant there would be one less mouth to feed.

Hoi Chun spent years learning his craft on the stages of Vosha and

in 1928 his opera troupe moved 60 miles away to Hong Kong and searched a bigger and wealthier

audiences. Even at that point acting wasn't paying the bills alone and Hoi Chun had to support
