There are a lot of reasons this can occur, poverty, famine, disease, natural disasters, just to aim a few.

In 1950, the last resident of the fishing town of Port Locke Alaska finally cleared out and left the place behind.

According to some versions of the tale, the reason the towns people packed their bags and left,

was because something else didn't want them there.

Port Locke is located in Port Chatham Bay along the southern edge of the Kenai Peninsula.

The now ghost town takes its name from the British naval captain Nathaniel Port Locke,

who sailed through the area back in 1786.

There remains some doubt whether Captain Port Locke ever actually dropped anchor and set foot on the patch of land that bears his name.

In either case, it probably doesn't matter since most of the local residents tended to call the place Port Chatham anyway.

Chatham's calm bay proved to be ideal for fishing.

By the turn of the 20th century an American company brought a fleet of fishing boats to the area and set up shop.

They established a poor lot cannery in by 1921 the town had grown big enough that they were able to open up a pool hall and a United States post office.
