Summary

This episode originally aired in August 2021, and is one of my personal favorites. Ready to bust out the air mattresses? This episode is FULL of practical, logistical, and emotional tips for hosting people in your home. I'm sharing everything from the 4 things that keep (most) guests happy, to the mindset shifts that will keep you from being overwhelmed or resentful. Look, if there's one subject I can give many (many) words to, it's hosting houseguests. Since I moved to Los Angeles 20 years ago, I've hosted friends and family of all group sizes, from couch crashers in a tiny apartment to my entire extended family at our new home last month. Our lovely lake house has also been a revolving door of guests over the years, where I've become an expert at managing meals, airport pickups, activities, and downtime for families and groups. I know that having guests can be an absolute honor and also completely exhausting. I hope this episode gives you the tools to plan and the freedom from pressure the next time you're the host. Welcome to the Ten Things to Tell You podcast. I'm Laura Tremain. I always have at least

0:16.8

ten things to tell you and you have ten things to tell. This is a show where we believe that sharing yourself will make you less lonely.

0:28.2

Now let's get to what we're here for today and that is to talk about hosting house guests.

0:37.4

And this topic even though it's not really something that I have talked about much on this show or online in a very long while.

0:47.8

This is actually something that I feel pretty experty on, to be honest with with you if I had to pick a thing that I could

0:57.8

Really share an expertise in it might be hosting house guests and that's because for almost the entirety of my

1:07.6

adult life definitely for the 20 years that I have lived in Los Angeles. I have had frequent house guests from the time that I just had a little tiny apartment and guests would crash on my couch.

1:21.0

All the way to last week I hosted my entire extended family,

1:27.0

17 people in my new house.

1:29.7

It was air mattresses galore.

1:31.8

It was also a little bit of a last minute thing so I had to think on my feet.

1:36.4

And I did post about that. I posted on Instagram about my whole family coming to visit, which

1:41.2

inspired some questions, which inspired this episode because I realized this is something that we can, you know, talk about now.

1:50.0

Having house guests was not on my radar for the last 18 months or so and now suddenly it was.

1:57.8

And I realize that this is a thing that I could definitely share 10 thoughts on and maybe it would be helpful to you.

2:05.0

We are also headed to our lake house soon and we have had our lake house since the

2:11.0

very early years of our marriage. Jeff and I bought it in late 2008 and every

2:17.8

single summer since then, with the exception of 2020, we have hosted tons and tons of friends and family and work retreats and

2:27.8

bachelorette weekends and I mean just so many guests have come through the screen door at our lake house.

2:36.3

So between that space and our home in Los Angeles,

2:40.6

we have hosted a ton of people, but in doing an episode about house guests, it is like sort of necessary to define what that might mean for you because we all have different situations, we all have different types of homes or live in different

2:55.3

locations that you know are really going to dictate the type of house guests that we're going to host. So maybe we're hosting our parents or siblings or family members. Maybe we're hosting friends from college. Maybe we're hosting, you know, friends with kids the same age as ours. Maybe we're hosting
