Though she probably would blanch at the suggestion, Sarah Peretsky's an important American cultural figure,

a best-selling author and grand master of the crime novel,

she blazed new trails for women and women crime writers

with her character V.I. Worschausky, a smart, street-wise Chicago private

detective fighting for the powerless in a tough and often corrupt world.

41 years after her first war Shawski novel was published,

Peretsky is preparing to launch her 22nd in April.

I sat down with her this week to talk about her life, her work,

and a world that's grown no less complicated since VI-I War Shawski first hung her fictional

shingle.

to seeing you for a long time because I've been a fan of your work

you're the grand dom of hard-boiled crime mystery writing and you're a trailblazer in that and beyond that you've led a

really interesting life you may deny it but I think our listeners will have a
