Summary

In this 246th episode I welcome Dr. Phil Carullo to the show to discuss Tape. That's right, tape. We discuss tape as a medical device, the tape-skin interface, how to prevent injury and infections from tape, and the evidence for different taping techniques.

Hello and welcome back to ACRAC. I'm Jed Wolpa and I am excited for this show today.

0:19.4

In many ways this is a unique ACRAC podcast and you'll know why in a second I have with

0:24.3

me a really fantastic guest, Dr. Phil Carulo, who is one of our pediatric anesthesiologists

0:29.5

here. And interestingly enough, though, I would love to have him back another day to talk

0:33.4

about a topic in pediatric anesthesia that is not really what we're going to talk about

0:37.3

today because Phil has taken a real interest in, believe it or not, tape. That's right,

0:42.4

tape. And we are going to talk today about tape. Now before you turn off your radio,

0:47.8

and I know you're not listening on a radio, we are going to convince you that this is

0:51.8

actually a fascinating topic and that Phil has taken interest in for a good reason.

0:55.6

So Phil, welcome to the show. Thank you, Jed. I really appreciate it. I started listening

1:00.4

to ACRAC when I was a resident and continued as a fellow and still listening now. So it's

1:04.7

really fun to be here. I really feel honored to be part of the ACRAC podcast group. And

1:12.6

to talk about tape, which is really interesting and fun topic. So I'll start off by just a

1:19.8

full disclosure. I get this question a lot. I have no actual personal or professional

1:25.2

interests in tape technology or development or research. But I really like to talk about

1:32.1

tape for two main reasons. One, it's just a really fun topic. It's something that a lot

1:38.2

of people in healthcare interact with on a regular basis. We use tape every single day

1:43.2

and multiple types of tape on a daily basis. And I found that it doesn't matter if you're

1:46.9

a CA one or a seasoned attending. We know how to use it, but we really don't know much

1:51.6

else about it. And so really understanding the risks and benefits of tape and the evidence

1:56.2

behind the best way to use it clinically is often not there. And this in many ways is

2:01.6

probably the only education you'll ever get on this topic. So it's fun from that standpoint.
