Summary

My friend Liz Macdonald (UVU psychology graduate, married mother of three, lives in SLC) shares research from her capstone project on “Exploring the Impact of Parents’ Religious Rigidity on Young Adults Disaffiliating from The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints’. Liz (who does not attend Church) is not trying to pull people out of the Church—but rather shares principals and concepts that can bring LDS families together where there are different levels of belief. I believe our Heavenly Parents are pleased when families stay strong, there in open communication and we see and value the contributions of everyone. Liz can be reached at [email protected] or parentfromtheinsideout.com. Thanks for being on the podcast Liz. You are doing needed work!

And for some of you that know the name Liz McDonald, this is not the Liz McDonald that's in Mesa, Arizona, wife to Eric McDonald, our great ally parents. This is a different Liz McDonald, an equally wonderful woman, just wanted, that lives in Utah. So I just wanted our listeners to be clear. We've had Liz McDonald and

Eric on the podcast earlier. We're going to talk in this podcast about the research that Liz did

at Utah Valley University, just working to bridge the gap between active LDS parents and young

0:52.7

adults that have separated themselves from the church.

This is a podcast to just try to find common ground that Liz is doing to keep the family

1:01.5

circled together even when there's differences in religion.

1:06.1

Is that a fair introduction?

1:08.0

Yeah, that's great.

1:09.2

So Liz will give us a little bit of her background.

1:11.9

That'll be one section of the podcast. We'll get into the research and also hopes for the

1:16.7

outcome. But the goal of this podcast isn't really to bring people that have left the church

1:22.3

back to the church or invite people in the church to leave. The goal of this podcast is just like Elder Cook suggested

1:30.1

diversity, unity and diversity. So there's great diversity in LDS families. Some families have

1:37.0

every member of their family that believes. And some families, which may be the majority, once children

1:42.9

are in their 20s and 30s,

1:44.6

have some children that have perhaps stepped away.

1:47.8

And that can be difficult, obviously, for LDS parents.

1:50.9

And so the work that Liz is doing and the things we're going to talk about is,
