It's the end of an era for a long-time mall mainstay. Express Inc. has filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy. The retailer

will close roughly 95 of its 500 express locations and all 10 of its smaller, more casual,

up-west stores. So now, a bit of a eulogy, if you will. If you came of age in the early 2000s,

you're undoubtedly familiar with Express's

gauzy blouses, cocktail dresses, and statement jewelry. But what you may not know is just how

intertwined Express was with the growth of other so-called mall brands, those brands that are

specially designed and situated to draw attention in a crowded shopping center setting.

In 1980, Limited Brands opened its first Express store, a women's clothing shop called Limited Express in Chicago.

By 1986, that first store had expanded to 250.

Yes, that quickly, and began testing men's clothing concepts.
