Summary

Mark Mann-Bryans and Jake Boxall-Legge wrap-up their coverage of the Japanese Grand Prix in what was a tense battle at the front between Max Verstappen, Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri. Mark and Jake review the "if's and but's" of the race, as to whether McLaren should have been more aggressive on strategy, or if Norris' trip across the grass on pit exit made a difference. Should they have swapped cars and let Piastri attack Verstappen at the front? Also, who's more accountable for the lack of passing, the track, of Year 4 of this regulation set? There's also a review on a strong weekend for the rookies, with Kimi Antonelli in sixth for Mercedes, Isack Hadjar in eighth for Racing Bulls, and Ollie Bearman's second consecutive points finish for Haas. We said here yesterday we were a bit unsure whether we'd be able to hang on having qualified ahead of the two McLarence, thinking they were quicker.

But he managed everything perfectly. You know, this was a

0:39.4

real Max Verstappen win very much compared to what he did in 2023. So managed to lead the field away.

0:47.0

That's what he needed to do. That's what he did. And then it was just all about keeping the

two McLaren's behind.

0:54.4

It did help that degradation was very, very low.

0:57.7

And as we know, McLaren's strength is in managing its tire degradation.

1:01.5

So this was something that the Staffney didn't need to worry about.

1:04.6

He didn't need to worry about the McLaren's coming back at him at the end of the

1:06.8

Stinn because he had it well managed.

1:10.6

I think towards the end of the first

1:11.8

and Norris had managed to cut a two second gap into about 1.4, 1.5 but this still wasn't

1:17.5

enough to really put the Stapin under any pressure. The DRS zone wasn't closing. The

1:23.3

Stapin could manage each of the the ends of the two stents.

1:28.3

And so it was just essentially just a perfect win, didn't really need to fight them off
