April 16th. Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell gave his starkest warning yet on potential economic consequences from President Donald Trump's tariffs.

Unemployment is likely to go up as the economy slows in all likelihood, and inflation is likely to go up as tariffs find their way, and some part of those tariffs come to be paid by the public.

So that's the strong likelihood.

Speaking at an event hosted by the Economic Club of Chicago,

Powell said tariff increases are, quote,

significantly larger than anticipated,

and that uncertainty surrounding them could inflict lasting economic damage.

The news spooked investors, with the Dow falling 700 points.

The Fed is responsible for promoting full employment and keeping inflation in check,

but Trump's tariffs stood in both of those goals.

However, the U.S. economy remains in decent shape for now, according to the latest data.

Powell says the best move is to see what the data shows about how the U.S. economy is responding

to Trump's policies.
