Summary

On this episode of the Real Life Pharmacology Podcast, I cover some of the most common food and supplement drug interactions.



The 3 G's can potentially increase the risk of bleeding in patients on anticoagulants and antiplatelets. I discuss what supplements these are.



There are some vitamins that can cause drug interactions. Vitamin C is a supplement that can alter the absorption of some medications.



Metal cations like iron can bind certain medications and reduce absorption. I discuss which medications are most likely to be affected.

And one of the first ones I'm going to start out with here is grapefruit juice.

So not going to spend much time on this, you know, supplement, food, whatever you

want to call it, but recall that it is a SIP-3A-4 inhibitor, and there's a lot of drugs

that are broken down and metabolized by SIP-3A-4.

So just a quick refresher, numerous statins, amiodarone, colchazine,

some of the immunosuppressive agents like Tachrolomus, for example,

calcium channel blockers.

These are all drugs that are broken down significantly by SIP 3A4.

Naturally, they're going to have their concentrations rise,

and we're going to be more likely to have toxicity-type situations with those meds.
