I asked Alice about her own inspirations and one of the names that popped up was Freya Stark.

Stark was a prolific explorer and writer in the 20th century, penning more than two dozen books on her travels through the Middle East.

She was one of the first non-Arab's to travel through the Southern Arabian Desert in modern

times.

Stark's journey to the fabled Valley of the Assassins and her search for one of the lost fortresses of the mysterious

order of the Assassins is one of the great adventure stories of the era.

These are wonderful tales where we see how this diminutive young woman developed into one of the great travelers of the day all by using her wits and charm, nary a gun in sight, except for those used by bandits and colonial officials. I asked Alice Morrison what was so interesting about
