24. I'm Caleb Brown. The FDA's rejection of MDMA as a treatment shouldn't signal the end of the road for attempting

to get veterans and others the help they need to secure their own mental well-being.

Mason Marks is with a project on psychedelic's law and regulation at the Petrie Flom Center for Health

Law Policy at Harvard Law School.

We spoke about the possible paths forward for psychedelic's assisted therapy. Mason, you and I have spoken on a related subject that strongly indicates that

psychedelics have value. that mind that they otherwise might not be able to, that there may be a path forward for a right

related strongly to our right to self-medicate. So we're here talking about a different subject which is the attempt

at getting some sort of FDA approval for the drug MDMA known as Ecstasy or Molly for

therapeutic use and before we get into how the FDA made its disappointing decision, let's talk

about what the promise was going into these phase three clinical trials that we had.

It seemed extremely promising for people who had suffered from PTSD.

A large fraction of people in earlier studies had shown essentially not enough symptoms of

PTSD to qualify for a diagnosis of PTSD with a fairly limited amount of treatment.

So characterize if you don't mind what you saw as the promise going into this FDA process?

Sure. I think there's a lot of promise for

psychodellics generally, not just MDMA, which technically is not really

a psychedelic, but it tends to get lumped in to that category.

But other substances like silicibin, even LSD now is moving through the FDA approval process and there are others like

Mescalin, Ibegane, there's some clinical interests around that as well.

So I think there are several substances that show

great potential for treating conditions
