Yes. It's Shark Week on Discovery and that can only mean one thing, sharks, lots of sharks.

And when most people hear that word, their minds conjure up a massively muscular, silky, smooth, ancient apex predator prowling just below the surface,

stalking his prey. But the truth is, sharks come in a wide variety of shapes, sizes, and even personalities.

And scientists have just discovered a new species of ghost shark

in the depths of the Andaman Sea off the coast of Thailand.

Okay, ghost sharks are kind of incredible.

As I understand it, by absolutely binging Shark Week, of course,

Ghost sharks spend their lives way, way below the surface,

I think, right?

Yeah, that's right.

And the thing is, while they are closely related to sharks, they actually aren't technically

sharks themselves.

They're what's known as chimeras and they diverged from sharks and rays sometime around

400 million years ago.
