Summary

When we think of cutting edge climbing, we think of cutting edge athleticism. But what about the mental side? The true test of finishing the world’s most difficult routes may not come down to strength, but mental fitness. Today, we are joined by Jonathan Siegrist to discuss the mental hurdles climbers experience. Alex, there are so many strong climbers out there. Does it ever sort of blow your mind how much

0:05.8

the limits of the sport, like the strength of athletes, has progressed in the last few years?

0:12.6

Yeah, I mean, it is, it is very impressive. In a way, it hasn't surprised me that much because

0:18.0

I've been in the middle of it the whole time and you're just surrounded by the constant news and whatever else. But then every once in a while I step back

0:24.6

and I think that when I was a kid climbing V12 was the hardest thing in the world. And now I'm like,

0:29.3

man, climbing V12 is stupid nowadays. It's just not even like everybody climbs V12. Like who doesn't

0:35.3

climb B12? You know, it's crazy.

0:38.4

Me, but yeah, me too sadly. Yeah, there is this sort of been an explosion in strength that's

0:48.0

happened, you know, through training, through the raw numbers of climbers participating in the

1:08.7

deal with fear and climb dangerous routes, then I think that

1:12.8

that has certainly lagged behind the physical progress that we've seen in terms of grades.

1:18.3

But I do think that there's a mental side to climbing hard roots.

1:22.3

And in that respect, I think that we've probably seen tremendous improvement mentally as well, just because

1:29.2

you can't climb the hardest routes in the world without having a pretty solid mental game

1:33.3

in some way. So I don't know, I think that there definitely has been a lot of improvement on that

1:37.7

front. It's just less obvious. We all know that climbing is a physical endeavor, but we often forget

1:43.4

the mental side.

1:44.6

It impacts almost every side of the sport,
