The kids are not sicker than ever and the trend is getting worse and worse. Can you give us some

0:08.9

stats big picture? Yeah. Well, you know, let's go way back to 2005 and this is where I remember

0:16.4

starting out as an integrated pediatrician. I opened up my practice in 2004 as a

0:21.6

functional medicine doc and I remember reading this article in the New England Journal of Medicine that said

0:27.5

that for the very first time in history our kids are expected to have shorter lifespans than us, their parents.

0:35.7

And I thought, oh my God, we need to, what's going on here, right, with all of these medical advances.

0:40.8

Now fast forward, almost almost 20 years and I would say that we're I mean we're

0:46.4

certainly not in any better shape and we're probably in worse because we have

0:50.5

almost one and two kids diagnosed with a chronic health concern.

0:53.9

And then forget about an actual diagnosis. I mean, so many kids have health concerns that are

0:58.7

not quite yet diagnosed, but we do know that one in five kids has eczema, one in 10 has asthma, one in

10 has ADHD, the number of kids with auto immunity is on the rise and the age

group with the fastest rise in auto immunity are teenagers out of any other

1:16.8

age group the 12 to 19 year olds and then when we look at anxiety mental health

1:21.9

concerns which as we know in the functional medicine

1:24.8

world we cannot separate out from the rest of what's going on with our gut, our brains, our immune

1:29.3

systems. So by the time kids are 18, and two is going to be diagnosed with a mental health disorder

1:36.7

And when we look at our teen girls, I mean we know that through the pandemic

1:40.4

This mental health emergency has really been you know the alarm has been raised

1:45.6

for kids and teenagers we had that long before the pandemic but now we know that

1:50.7

one in three teenage girls will seriously think about suicide in their

1:56.2

adolescent years.
