When Jan Broberg looks back at her childhood, she does so with a smile.

Jan grew up in Pocatello, Idaho, with her two younger sisters and a loving and supportive

father and mother. It was the beginning of the 1970s, and the country had just witnessed mankind

take its first steps on the moon. The achievements set off an astronomical zeitgeist,

and people developed a fascination for astronauts, space, UFOs, and aliens.

The Brobergs were the picture of an all-American family. Jan recalls memories of writing around on her

bike, eating ice cream, drinking lemonade and playing pretend with her siblings and friends.

The Broberg family were faithful Mormons who attended

church every Sunday and forged close relationships with those in their small town in congregation.

One family the Brobergs became particularly close to after they moved into their neighborhood

were the Birchtolds. Robert Birchtold, nicknamed B, became best friends with Jan's dad.

His wife was best friends with Jan's mom, the kids, best friends with Jan and her sisters.

And B became an almost second father figure to Jan. It wasn't out of the ordinary for Jan to spend

time with him. He was a trusted friend of the family and practically

family himself. On October 17, 1974, with permission from her parents, Birch Told picked up 12-year-old

Jan from her piano lesson and told her he was taking her to go horseback riding, an activity
