Summary

Could our reality be a simulation?

Tom Campbell, a Physicist, lecturer, and author, joins us today to challenge the notion of reality as we perceive it, explaining his groundbreaking Theory of Everything (“My Big T.O.E”) and how our perception of the world may be part of a vast simulation.

Get ready to explore the nature of free will, entropy, our connection to a larger consciousness system, and how this gives purpose and meaning to our existence.

OUR GUEST

THOMAS W. CAMPBELL (born December 9, 1944) is a physicist, lecturer, and author of the trilogy My Big TOE (Theory of Everything), which aims to unify general relativity, quantum mechanics, and metaphysics along with the origins of consciousness. His work is based on the simulation argument, proposing that reality is both virtual and subjective. In 2017, Campbell and his co-authors published the paper "On Testing the Simulation Theory" in the International Journal of Quantum Foundations, suggesting several experiments to test this hypothesis.

Campbell holds both a B.S. and an M.S. in Physics. He started but did not complete a PhD in experimental nuclear physics, with a thesis on low-energy nuclear collisions. He worked as a systems analyst with U.S. Army technical intelligence for a decade before moving into the R&D of technology supporting defensive missile systems. For nearly 30 years, he worked within the U.S. missile defense community as a contractor to the Department of Defense. Most recently, he worked for NASA’s Ares I program (the successor to the Shuttle), assessing and solving problems of risk and vulnerability to ensure mission and crew survivability and success.

Tom Campbell, thank you for being here.

    0:02.2

    I appreciate you making time.

    0:03.6

    Thank you, Aaron.

    0:04.8

It's my pleasure to be here.

    0:06.8

Knowledge is a wonderful thing, but shared knowledge is even better.

    0:10.5

    I agree with that.

    0:12.4

So there is no one arguably better on the planet to ask this question that's been asked many times, many circumstances.

    0:20.8

If a tree falls in the woods

    0:24.8

and there's no one around to hear the tree, does the tree make a sound? Tom Campbell. Well, first,

    0:31.5

there is no tree. There is no woods. There is no sound. If no one's there, then none of that is being rendered. Now,

    0:39.7

let's say there's a squirrel that lives in that woods. That squirrel is going to be aware,

    0:46.2

and the rendering through that squirrel will still take place. So in that squirrel's consciousness, in the squirrel's mind, it will see the tree,

    0:59.3

be aware of it, be aware of its falling, just like it would be if there were a person there.

    1:05.0

But it'll only be rendered to that squirrel in a squirrel's view. A squirrel's view is not the same as a man's view. A man sees

    1:14.9

different things and experiences different things than the squirrel does. So it would only be

    1:20.3

rendered to the squirrel in a squirrel's eye view of the tree falling. You, something that you share,

    1:28.3

you share a lot of things that I'm a big fan of

    1:30.3

and I'm excited to get into.

    1:32.3

Your perspective is that the world that we're experiencing,

    1:36.3

would simulation be inappropriate language for that?

    1:40.3

Simulation, virtual reality, computed, all of those things are accurate what does

    1:48.5

that mean for a layman person how can a layman person digest and understand
