Juneteenth is a freedom-centered holiday that is short for June 19th.

It marks the day federal troops arrived in Galveston, Texas

in 1865 to inform all Texans about the Emancipation Proclamation that had formally freed the slaves,

nearly two and a half years earlier. Back in a time when communication with the outside world

was a matter of weeks and months, not seconds and minutes,

it wasn't a sure thing that everyone would hear about important breaking news in a timely fashion.

It took a while for the news of emancipation to reach Texas, and when it did, slave owners committed to their gruesome industry, buried the information, and continued

to operate as usual.

Other slave owners began to see Texas as a type of blind spot in the emancipation policy

and moved there to hopefully continue their trade under the radar.

All that deception was crushed on June 19, 1865, when federal troops arrived to share the good news.

Juneteenth became a Texas tradition and one that came to be celebrated by many black communities across the nation.

In 2021, the Biden administration declared Juneteenth a federal holiday, putting it on par with July 4th as a

celebration of freedom. Some Americans found the move annoying, a naked attempt at pandering in the

age of Black Lives Matter. And I have no doubt that is exactly what Democrats and Joe Biden were

doing. But that is neither here nor there at this point, and Juneteenth is

certainly a holiday worth celebrating. Freedom is the hallmark of American culture. And given that

we are forced to choke on an entire month of celebrating the sexual proclivities of others,

it doesn't seem like such a bad idea to add a second day of freedom
