I'm 50.

This week is my 50th birthday, and because we're silly humans, we look at 50 as a milestone in life.

I suppose it is. It is at the very least a good excuse to stop and take account of your life

where you've been, where you're going. It's a crazy time to be alive, a stressful time to be

alive. But man, oh man, I have never been more grateful to be alive. You see, my life was

headed towards statistical hell. I had every number working against me. I was a black child growing

up in a divorced home, no father, suffered extreme racial abuse, lived in a mentally abusive home,

on welfare.

And to top it off, I grew up in the 80s.

When our parents didn't even know where we were 75% of the time,

it was a wild childhood.

And every statistic I've ever read says that I should have ended up like so many in my situation have.

Poor, unmarried, undereducated,

but God. As I look back over my life, I see that God was with me every step, even when I didn't know him. I see so many situations and decisions that I have been spared from. But it's not just what I've been spared

from, but also what I was given. I was given a path to forgiveness, a path to love. I graduated

college. I had many adventures. I married a good and faithful man and created a family.

Together we scraped our way into the middle class,

which has afforded us many more opportunities for adventure. I live in the greatest country on

earth, and I am loved by the greatest people on earth, in my opinion. I have food to eat.
