Well, Trump has essentially notified about half the Department of Education that they don't work here anymore.

0:06.7

And his appointment to be education secretary, Linda McMahon, is pretty much being charged with getting rid of the Department of Education.

0:14.8

Now, unlike what some people will suggest that this is crazy or radical. This has actually been something that Republicans

0:20.9

have talked about ever since the 80s because the bottom line is the Department of Education

0:25.4

has only been around since 1979. And yet it has done an excellent job of convincing a lot of

0:30.4

Americans that somehow we never had education before the Department of Education. And if we get

0:35.9

rid of the Department of Education, nobody will learn how to read or write

0:39.4

or become trans anymore.

0:40.9

And that third one is actually probably true.

0:43.3

But today, what we're going to do is we're going to look at not only what Trump has actually

0:47.6

been doing with respect to the Department of Education, we're also going to take a look at what

0:51.9

the history, what the record of the Department of Education

0:54.5

is. And we're going to start to imagine what education could look like in this country,

1:00.2

not just if the federal government wasn't as involved as they currently are, but we're actually

1:05.0

1:09.7

government is out because this

1:10.9

is a state and local issue.

1:13.4

I don't think it is.

1:14.8

And we're going to discuss what it could be if we just rethought education rather than go

1:21.9

along with the model that has been kind of the, I don't know, the status quo for decades

1:26.0

now in the United States.

1:27.4

All of that and more coming up on this episode of Making the Argument.
