Algorithms are a black box.

They're present in all kinds of technologies we interact with every day.

And they shape all kinds of real world outcomes.

But we don't know how.

You can think of an algorithm kind of like a recipe.

It's a program that takes inputs or ingredients and serves up particular outputs like a cake

based on a set of instructions.

We know that we're the ones providing the ingredients in the form of what we click on, Google,

or give hearts and likes to.

And we see the results like targeted ads or recommended posts.

But most of us have no idea what the recipes are.

And the people who design and use algorithms don't have to tell us.

Whether it's in low-stake stuff like social media or in really, really high-stake stuff

like police run facial recognition programs, the algorithms are still mysteries to us.

And when it comes to artificial intelligence, we're even more in the dark.

If algorithms are like recipes, then AI is like someone who's only seen a lot of cooking
