Summary

Why are we here? Is there a God? A reason to it all? How, and why, did the universe begin, and how, and why, will it end? Sean M. Carroll, a cosmologist and physicist specializing in dark energy and general relativity, joins Nick to answer the questions that plague us all, including, if there's a chance that somewhere out there in the cosmos, there is another extraterrestrial Donald Trump ruling over a planet of little green aliens. Welcome to Inside the Hive. This is your host Nick Bilton. So three years ago this

0:07.9

week my wife and I rushed off to the emergency room because she was pregnant with our first child and was

0:14.6

about to give birth. I remember everything about this evening, but there's a moment

0:19.2

before the birth that actually stands out to me like crystal clear.

0:24.0

What happened was our doctor who had delivered

0:28.0

6,500 children before ours,

0:31.0

not on that evening of course, over the period of his incredible career.

1:10.0

arguments he makes. He's definitely one of the smartest people we've had on this

1:13.8

podcast to date. He's a cosmologist, a physics professor, he specializes in dark

1:18.4

energy and general relativity, teaches at Caltech, he's written several books including the big picture on the origins of life

1:26.1

meaning and the universe itself. So he's going to join me today to talk about all

1:30.6

of those things and what the meaning of life is if there is no meaning at all.

1:35.4

He's going to explain how there is probably very likely not intelligent life anywhere else in the

1:41.1

universe because mathematically speaking it is really

1:44.9

really difficult to live where we do and the way we do. He's going to talk about how
