On July 16, 2011, a man was killed in a case that saw a family dynamic that made him the target of some dangerous individuals.

On July 16, 2011, the body of 43-year-old Roberta Ayala of Grimes, California, was found in a rice

field in Colusa County. On that same day, hours before the discovery, Roberto had picked up his seven-year-old son,

brought him to lunch,

and then headed for the rice field belonging to the Moore Brothers

to adjust an irrigation pump.

As his young son sat and watched his father from a distance,

there was a loud explosion that sent the boy running towards Roberto.

When he arrived, he saw that his father was on fire

and sprinted off to try and find someone to help.

He ended up running about two miles before finding anyone.

By the time the help arrived, Roberto was already dead.

The father had, as police would soon learn, unwittingly detonated an explosive device that went off right at his chest level.

When firefighters arrived, his body was still burning.

With pieces of shrapnel in his neck, chest, and brain, Roberto's truly horrific

death stumped investigators who were unsure if this was a tragic accident or if the man was

the victim of foul play. In the end, Roberto Ayala's death and the investigation that followed would expose some truly disturbing family dynamics, ones that killed an innocent father who unknowingly walked straight into the crosshairs.

Investigating the death on August 12th and the 15th, officers received letters from someone claiming responsibility for the bomb.
