Hello and welcome to Frank Skinner's Poetry Podcast this week Joe Shapcot.

Joe Shapcot is a highly respected and successful English poet and in 2010 she produced a collection called

of mutability.

Now I must have acquired of mutability about 2012

and I read it through a few times and I thought it was a really good book of poetry and then

actually quite recently I read it again and every poem seemed to have blossomed to sort of flowered into something

remarkable maybe not every poem but loads of poems in the book, which I suppose is ironic as it's called

of mutability and it's all about mutating and changing. I say it's all about I'm always a little bit wary of

collections with a big theme. I think as a stand-up comedian I see some stand-ups who will do an hour-long

show that is themed about a specific thing and usually it's come about because they've got about 25 minutes of

material on that subject and then they've just put in some other funny stuff

there's nothing to do with the theme but they can crowbar it in a bit and that can happen sometimes in poetic

collections

It happens less in of mutability than many many examples I can think of. There is lots of stuff
