Thanks for joining me tonight for Sleep Scriptures,

as we look at the book of Jonah, an unusual story from the Bible,

in the new international version.

This book tells about the rebellious prophet Jonah, supposedly a man of God, who seems to despise God.

Everything is the opposite of what you'd expect in this story.

It points out the self-righteousness of our hero, Jonah,

to whom we can all regrettably relate.

Jonah is given a mission from God to go preach against the evil in Nineveh, the enemy of Israel, and therefore Jonah's enemy too.

Instead of following God's instruction, Jonah boards a ship going as far away from Nineveh as possible.

God answers Jonah's defiance by sending a huge storm.

And the sailors, fearing God, reluctantly throw Jonah overboard.

God provides unimaginable refuge in the belly of a whale.

Jonah prays, promising to obey God, and God responds. Extraordinarily, the fish spews Jonah out under dry land.

Finally, Jonah goes to Nineveh and tells the Ninevites that the city will be overturned.
