First, the mainline churches, Christian churches, got involved with the social gospel and

salvation by works, and they got away from the gospel itself, from the Bible.

And they blended into the surrounding culture, so people seemed to drift away.

The change in white Protestant evangelical culture, which for a while looked so much stronger,

was a different form of secularization,

which is they start getting involved in politics.

One of the things that I've really been thinking about in the last years is what role religion plays in society?

I grew up without a religious tradition and a little bit like the four horsemen of atheism in the 2000s

assumed that a lot of the things that are bad in the world come because of religious strife and prejudice.
