Summary

Chapter 11 - A new defense lawyer. A prison sentence put off. Although he was found guilty of murder, Pierre Romain is not done playing the system. He hires a more prominent attorney, causing further delays in this "never-ending" case. As the new defense attempts to resurrect one of the trial attorney's failed arguments, it becomes increasingly unclear if justice for Jade Clark will ever be served.

0:08.0	Pierre Romaine was convicted by 12 and scheduled to be judged by one, the honorable Larry Paul Fiddler,
0:13.0	in Los Angeles Superior Court.
0:16.0	But when that day came in late 2017, something occurred that probably surprised no one.
0:22.0	Romaine had once more changed lawyers firing Winston McCassan, the attorney who had presented and argued his case during trial.
0:29.0	The new attorney was James Blatt, a veteran criminal defense attorney that I knew of and covered in cases going all the way back to the early 90s when I was a newspaper reporter.
0:38.0	And what also came is no surprise was that Blatt asked for time, not for his client for himself.
0:45.0	He was new in the case, he had not attended the trial and he needed a transcript to go over to determine what issues and occurrences he needed to know about before proceeding with a sentencing and a motion for a new trial.
0:58.0	So once again, justice for the murder of Jay Clark was delayed.
1:02.0	The judge accepted the change of attorney and ordered the court reporter to prepare a transcript of the three-week-long trial for Blatt.
1:09.0	The sentencing hearing was continued, but I don't think anybody in that courtroom knew at that time how long the delays would last and what other tactics Romaine would employ to put off his sentencing.
1:23.0	This episode of the podcast is being recorded more than a year after that hearing.
1:27.0	It's now 2019 and Pierre Romaine has still not been sentenced.
1:32.0	And his victim's mother, aging an ill, waits for the day the justice will be served.
1:37.0	She calls all the time, in fact, right before this hearing she wanted to come out.
1:44.0	She wants to be brought out so she can make a statement and every time she calls we have to tell her,
1:51.0	it's been put over and she's ill.
1:56.0	She keeps getting cancer and knock on wood.
1:59.0	It's been in remission, but it keeps coming back.
2:02.0	And so she's worried she won't make it for the sentencing.
2:06.0	First, she was worried she wouldn't make it for the trial.
2:08.0	Now she's worried she won't make it for the sentencing.
