Summary

In today's episode, Mark again is analyzing motion capture data from elite players—this episode features Rory McIlroy. In this episode, Mark asks Greg and Lou about Rory's left knee movement at address through impact. A little spoiler: his knee does turn quite a bit toward target at impact: but the way that he gets there might not be what you think. And as Mark says, it traces back to a simple setup issue that most amateurs get wrong. There may well be information here that can directly help your golf swing. It's my turn to be the numbers guy.

0:03.4

We're talking Rory McElroy's golf swing with an iron this week.

0:06.4

And we're going to talk about a number that's never really looked at measured.

0:10.0

But with the gear system from the guys at JD Golf Academy, I've got Torpro swings.

0:14.8

And we can delve into some actual numbers of what happens on some of the captures of their golf swing.

0:20.4

Bear in mind, I have got dates of when these captures are.

0:23.7

So golfers swings do change and these numbers are so, like, to the degree,

0:27.5

if you're seeing other numbers or you see different things and different players as it moves on,

0:31.9

like they do make swing changes.

0:33.3

But on the date of the capture, this is the numbers that we got.

0:36.2

So we're talking left knee turn.

0:38.5

So to put that into perspective for the listeners,

0:42.3

if I stand addressing my golf ball,

0:46.6

if my lead knee, my left knee is running a golfer,

0:49.6

was pointing straight forward.

0:51.7

So it wouldn't be pointing at the golf ball.

0:53.5

If you imagine I've got a width of starts, ball in the middle it wouldn't be pointing out the golf ball. If you imagine I've got

0:54.4

a width of stance ball in the middle, it would be pointing at zero degrees turn if it kind of just

1:01.4

shot straight out in front of me parallel to my ball position line. Does that make sense?

1:07.5

I like what you said when you explain it. It's like if you're shooting a laser out of your

1:10.8

knee, it would point it would point dead straight forward. That'd be zero. And if you imagine,

1:15.4

if you imagine if I go shoulder whip stance, ball in the middle and I point my laser shooting
