Hello, welcome to Iroquois History and Legends. I'm Andrew. And I'm Caleb. And welcome to this very

special episode where we're going to be telling a few Iroquois legends. That's right. The first

seven episodes we've done so far, we've been focusing a lot on the narrative to tell you, you know,

some of the prehistory leading up for our Iroquois history, but we thought it would be fun to every several

episodes throw in a legend that they may have told their kids and passed down from generations.

Yep. So the Haudi and Shoney told lots of different stories, and we're going to tell two of those

today.

You might draw a lot of parallels between Aesop's fables.

You'll also notice, as we tell more and more stories, a lot of these animals and characters in here, they have certain personality traits.

And you'll see that as a running theme, and sometimes the episodes tie into each other of the stories that they tell.

So I hope you guys enjoy these stories and here we go.

The Legend of Turtles Race with Beaver.

A long time ago there was a turtle that lived in a small pond.

Because the pond had everything that the turtle needed, she was very happy.

There was good food to eat, and the water was just deep enough

that there were many nice rocks that stuck up out of the water for the turtle to sunbat on.

Then one day, winter began to arrive. Just as it did every year, turtle swam

to the bottom of the pond and buried herself inside the thick mud. While turtle was sleeping during the

winter, a different animal came to the pond. It was beaver who was looking for a new home.

This place would be perfect, said beaver.

It just needs a few changes.

Just as beavers do best, right away he began taking down trees and building a large dam.
