Summary

I welcomed Wuhan-based Andrew Shaw onto the CHP to talk about his book. It's all about the plundering of China's cultural treasures and imperial artifacts by not just the British, French, and Americans. It seems everyone got in on the act. Even the local people. It's a miracle there was anything left for Chian's museums. Many of you are familiar with the stories about looting that took place in China between the 1840s and the turn of the century. In Andrew Shaw's book, "Spoil" we'll look at the extent of what happened. And on the next episode, we'll feature Andrew again, this time talking about his new book on the history of jade. 0:54.0	Andrew was formerly a BBC journalist, but chucked it all in to pursue his dream to learn to carve jade. He spent two years studying with
0:56.1	respected sujo masters, aside from being an author. Andrew's the only foreigner to be accepted as a
1:03.3	master jade carver in China. And after perfecting his craft, Andrew Shaw opened his own workshop and
1:09.4	gallery, and over the years, he has established his name in the world of Jade Artistry.
1:14.6	He has two books out concerning Jade, Jade Life from 2019, and out now a Jade Treasury, Ancient Legends, Modern Myths, Fascinating Stories, and Strange Facts, Surrounding the Stone of Heaven.
1:34.3	As we record this, I'm in Los Angeles and Andrew is in the historic city of Wuhan in Hubei Province. And I was able to cut a special deal with Andrew's publicists who invite him back on the CHP to discuss the history of Jade in China.
